Definitions:

Assault: Any act that threatens physical harm to a person regardless of whether actual harm has occurred.

Bullying: Repeated unreasonable and inappropriate treatment of  one person by another or others with the aim of intimidating, threatening, degrading offending and undermining. This can be either physical or psychological and may be overt or covert. It also can include the use of digital technology such as, computers, cell phones, the internet, and personal digital devices. This is referred to as cyber bullying.

Course, programs or activities: Course, programs or activities are hosted, sponsored, sanctioned and organized by GALG.

Discrimination: one or more unjustifiable actions or behaviours that seek to impose obligations  and disadvantages resulting in unfavourable or  preferential treatment which negatively affects the academic status of participants.

Harassment: aggravating comments and/or  conduct against person or persons. These comments and/or conduct are known to be or reasonably known to be offensive, hostile, inappropriate and unwelcomed.

Instructor: Any person employed by GALG to deliver one or more of its programs.

Participant: an individual registered to participate in one or more courses, programs or activities offered by GALG.

Sexual violence: Any physical or psychological violence that target sexualilty or is carried out through sexual means.

Sponsor. Any person, group or organization that may payments for others to participate in programs and activities offered by GALG..

Purpose: This code of conduct outlines the standards of conduct and behaviour that the Global Academy for Local Governance (GALG) expects of its instructors, participants, staff  and sponsors when participating in the its programs and activities.

Scope: GALG expects adherence to this Code of Conduct by all instructors, participants, staff and sponsors of its programs and activities.

GALG has outlined the following expectations of  participants, instructors, staff and sponsors of its programs  and activities. These expectations are based on specific standards and values of GALG.

GALG expectations of participants

Compliance: GALG expects all participants to read and familiarise themselves with the contents of this code of conduct and to comply accordingly.

Respect: Participants are expected to give due regard to their instructors, peers and staff even in times of disagreement or when there is lack of consensus. This includes showing respect for opinions, personal and institutional standards always.

Malicious speech or conduct that is discriminatory and directed at one or more persons or groups, based on their race, colour, ethnic origin, sex, sexual orientation, or creed is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

Punctuality: GALG expects all instructors and participants to be punctual for all classes and activities, and to submit assignments at the time specified by the relevant instructor. 

Integrity: GALG promotes and fosters academic integrity in all its programs and expects all participants in its programs and activities to behave ethically. For assignments, appropriate credits must be given to academic sources. Academic dishonesty, which includes the following, is unacceptable.

·        Plagiarism – using another person's ideas or work without acknowledgement and pretending that it is your own. This includes using another student’s work and presenting it as your own.

·        Cheating on assignments, examinations and tests.

·        Aiding or abetting another student in any form of academic dishonesty.

·        Use of copyright material in a manner that violates the restrictions of the copyright.

Perpetrators of any form of academic dishonesty will be subject to one or more of the following disciplinary actions:

·        A failing grade will be awarded for the relevant assignment.

·        Suspension from the course or program.

·        Expulsion from the GALG

Freedom of expression: GALG believes that participants in its programs and activities have the right to express their thoughts and opinions freely on all materials presented in its programs. This is an important part of academic life, and healthy debate and discussion are encouraged. However, such expression must not be offensive nor infringe upon the rights of, or in any way disparage the person or dignity of others. Furthermore, such opinions must be free from all forms of overt or covert discrimination and harassment.

Prohibited behaviour 

The following are behaviours that are unacceptable in any of GALG’s programs or activities:

·        Assaulting, intimidating, threatening, bullying including cyber-bullying or harassing another person or persons.

·        Committing or threatening any act of sexual violence against another person or persons.

·        Behaviour aimed at or resulting in the disruption of programs and activities.

·        Smoking or the imbibing of alcoholic beverages during classes or any activity of GALG.

 Those committing these acts will be subject to discipline as determined by the administration of GALG.

Expectations of GALG

GALG hereby commits itself to the following:

·        To conduct its programs and activities in a manner that encourages and supports the learning aspirations of its participants.

·        To provide an enabling learning environment that encourages excellence and in which respect for all is promoted.

·        To provide a learning environment devoid of all forms of discrimination and harassment.

·        To support participants in their learning communities.

GALG expectations of instructors

Instructors and facilitators are expected to:

·        Be always present and punctual for programs and activities as scheduled. Timely notice must be given to administration of GALG and participants when absence from class is unavoidable.

·        Model and maintain academic integrity in their teaching.

·        Provide instruction that fully complies with the program requirements.

·        Conduct themselves, in and outside of the classroom with professionalism and integrity.

·        Treat each program participant with respect, dignity and fairness.

·        Refrain from any discriminatory speech or behaviour, both in the classroom and in  assessment of participant work, test performance and assignments.
